Twitter Application Usage Statistics

I have seen many reports of application usage with Twitter, but since I will be releasing a new book on the topic of Twitter very soon (“Twitter for Business: Twitter for Friends“), I am seeking some data of my own. Many reports show massive use of the Twitter Website, with TweetDeck coming in second. I have a suspicion that my figures may vary simply for the fact that many users I tweet with tend to be very active and engaged users of Twitter. So let’s find out. Please take this very simple poll to answer what you use the most for sending and receiving your Twitter updates. If you use the Twitter Website, please answer “Other”, but what I am really after here is the popularity of each Twitter application produced outside of Twitter. I welcome your comments here on the blog.

I use tweepular...love it! It helps you find interesting people to follow as well as easily decipher who has been kind enough to follow you back and who hasn't - you can look at who you are following/those that are following you in list view - makes it very easy to modify and it shows you all kinds of stats for your twitter account.

I use tweetdeck while on the desktop and ubertwitter while mobile.

I've been using TweetDeck almost exclusively for the last two months. Just in the past week I've been using Seesmic Desktop to really give it a try. I must admit that I like many of the features like integrating several accounts and FB into a single timeline. I also like the how it visually separates tweets (white) replies (blue) and DMs (green) and integrates those into the timeline as well. However, there is no auto fill in of names, and the predominantly white background is definitely harder on the eyes. If I had those two changes I would be sold on Seesmic, but those two things are big things to me.

I believe the results of this poll not only reflect usage of specific application, but also usefulness. The accurate usage can be accounted for, but what this shows is also what engaged users are using. It shows what the people who are actually reading and responding to tweets are using. I think it is more interesting than the simple raw figures of what more people use. This shows what the people really communicating are using. :-)

While this is mainly looking at the desktop side of applications used there is an iPhone app and so for the sake of fairness perhaps a win mob app or category should be introduced.

I know there are far too many apps to list them all under any platform but a bit of balance would be good.

Still, it's been a good conversation around this issue and I'm sure TweetDeck will come out as the most popular.

If you have a comment such as "Why didn't you include Windows Mobile apps?" it is best to ask me here on the blog, where other participants can see it.

The answer to this question is that I am seeking specific data about the most popular applications being used. Windows Mobile is statistically insignificant while measuring distribution of the top three most used applications. Sorry, Bill Gates ... you missed this one. ;-)
